Yes, Gorgeouses, it’s true! Oprah Winfrey is going vegan for 21 days. It’s a detox of sorts that she hopes will help her shed some serious poundage. Here’s what she says about her vegan experience — her “21-Day Cleanse” — in her blog:
Well, I feel like I got baptized in Vegan Land today. Kathy Freston sent her chef, Tal Ronnen, to help me and three friends at Harpo who are doing the 21-day cleanse.
Wow, wow, wow! I never imagined meatless meals could be so satisfying. I had been focused on what I had to give up—sugar, gluten, alcohol, meat, chicken, fish, eggs, cheese. “What’s left?” I thought. Apparently a lot. I can honestly say every meal was a surprise and a delight, beginning with breakfast—strawberry rhubarb wheat-free crepes.
As Oprah explains in her blog, she was inspired to do this “inner makeover” after reading Kathy Freston’s book Quantum Wellness: A Transformative Guide to Health, Happiness and a Better World…. The book suggests that you give up caffeine, alcohol, sugar, animal products and gluten for 21 days — a relatively easy feat for someone who has a world-class chef at her beck and call, but perhaps not so much for the rest of us!
On Day 1, Oprah had the following epiphany (which I, of course, LOVE):
How can you say you’re trying to spiritually evolve, without even a thought about what happens to the animals whose lives are sacrificed in the name of gluttony?
HERE HERE! My sentiments exactly! This is exactly why I can’t eat meat! EXACTLY! Almost exactly! There’s more:
So this 21-day cleanse gives me a chance to think about it differently and see what my attachments are to certain kinds of foods—and what I’m willing to do to change.
Don’t know if I’m going to feel better or worse, but I’m willing to try to see if my body at least feels differently.
A sample day in Oprah’s diet? Doable…ish…. Check it:
So this first day wasn’t hard at all. For breakfast, I had steel-cut oatmeal with fresh blueberries, strawberries, chopped walnuts and a splash of soy milk and some agave nectar. For lunch, chunky mushroom soup with wild rice and pecans. As a snack, a handful of roasted almonds. And for dinner, a baked potato drizzled with olive oil, salt and pepper with a salad of shredded lettuce, cranberries, pine nuts and tiny orange slices with a vinegar and oil dressing.
Very satisfying. Day 1 also started with the meditation mantra that Kathy suggests in her book. I’m ready!
Oh, carp. Now I’m going to have to go out and by this book with all the Oprah devotees (I am NOT one) and get even more insane about food…. “Agave nectar”? It’s bad enough that I’m eating hemp protein powder and flaxseed oil now! LORD HELP ME! But, GO OPRAH. I will definitely be following this story….

I think I want to do something like this – after I am done with being pregnant and well into breastfeeding…… Although I do love meat – when my husband is out of town I totally live without it with no ill effects and actually get to the point where it makes me feel ill to eat it – then I fall off the wagon (usually at the Outback).

please note that if you do not get enough protein that your body will start to break down and “eat” your muscles. Be careful!
and Yeah, I could eat good too if I had a personal CHEF doing all the cooking!
